Congregation Shema Yisrael has an ongoing ministry of collecting food for the poor and donating it to the Idaho Foodbank. We do this, not to glorify our Congregation's name or our names, but to the glory and honor of God the Father, and his Son, our Messiah Yeshua. This is our work, to serve as he commanded; to feed the hungry and care for the needy.
Please bring at least one canned food item or other appropriate donation to each Shabbat worship service and place it in our donation container. Let us continue to be diligent in our service to the Messiah and to our fellow human being and provide donations to the Foodbank as often as we can.
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you made me your guest.
--Matthew 25:35
Messiah Yeshua said these words to his disciples on the Mount of Olives while he was teaching. The Almighty continually tells us throughout the Bible to help those in need. Congregation Shema Yisrael is answering that call to help the needy in the Treasure Valley. Our primary ministry to the community is to gather food and other non-perishable items on an ongoing basis, and donate them to the Idaho Foodbank.
We ask anyone who comes to worship with us on Shabbat to bring at least one item to donate. We will gratefully collect and store all donations that we receive. When our donation container is full, our youth group will transport all that we've gathered to the food bank for the benefit of those in need. After each delivery to the food bank, we will begin to fill our container again, perpetually gathering food and donating it to the hungry.
We encourage our members and our guests to participate. Needed items include the following:
Proteins
- Tuna
- Peanut butter
- Dried beans and peas
- Canned meats
- Dried meats
Grains
- Cereal
- Crackers
- Rice
- Oatmeal
- Pasta
Staples
- Sugar, Flour, Oil
- Instant Foods (nonperishable)
- Snack Foods
- Cleaning Supplies
- Personal Care Items
In Mark 12:29-31, Yeshua answers the question of which commandment is the most important by quoting Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18. We are to love our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our understanding, and with all our strength. And we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. Serving God is serving our neighbor. Help us continue to do His Work in our community. Give generously.
Contact Us if you have any questions.
Shalom.
