How goodly are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel! And I, with Your great loving-kindness, shall enter Your House; I shall prostrate myself toward Your Holy Temple in the fear of You. O Lord, I love the dwelling of Your house and the place of the residence of Your glory. Come, let us prostrate ourselves and bow; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker. But, as for me, may my prayer to You, O Lord, be in an acceptable time. O God, with Your abundant kindness, answer me with the truth of Your salvation. -Ma Tovu: A traditional Hebrew prayer
While the general information about the Hebrew 102 class can be found on the Announcements page, there is more to this course than just a language class. The class on Hebrew Prayer is also focused on analyzing why we pray using these sorts of prayers. Using a siddur (prayer book), is a blessing, and uniquely guides those praying with it into a greater understanding of God. This may seem strange if you primarily use extemporaneous prayer in your time with God, but there is much more to be learned.
Our current class is using Ma Tovu as an example of how praying the traditional prayers can connect people to God in a special and wonderful way. We are offering a recording of the class held on Monday, September 14, 2009 to show how language and liturgy blend together to provide a deeper understanding of Hebrew prayers. Even those of you who regularly pray with a siddur may find something new when listening to this class.
The recording is 133 minutes long, so you may want to reserve some time before beginning to listen. Pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, sit down, turn up the speaker volume, and let yourself learn what Ma Tovu has to teach.
